"Dancers work just as hard as policemen: always alert, always tense. But see, policemen don't have to be beautiful at the same time."
-George Balanchine
Here are some tips on how to do your very best for your dance audition!
Before the Audition
Learn as much as you can about your kind of dance.
Get a good night's sleep before the audition.
Get a good breakfast so you'll have energy.
Get psyched up to perform, don't panic
Plan on just going in there, do your best and see if they like you. There is no point in worrying too much. Auditions should show the judges and Directors that you love dance.
Wearing a distinctive leotard will help your chances. That will single you out and you will appear to be more distinct.
Plan for everything that you can. Be ready! Have your shoes and clothing checked at least two days before the audition. Plan how you need to look at the audition. How will you be wearing your hair? How much make-up is appropriate?
At the Audition
Arrive at least thirty minutes early! This gives you time to fill in the registration information and have yourself set for the audition.
It is good to not be the first or last person along the barre. Why? If you're last, no one to follow if you forget the steps! The person who goes first may be given conservative scores or be forgotten by the end.
Be neat in appearance - no holes in your tights, no rags and no clothing that needs constant adjustment. Judges and Directors are normally looking for performers with pride. Your appearance reflects on what type of person you are.
Follow instructions! When you are taught a combination, try to perform it exactly the way the choreographer moves. If you perform steps with your own interpretation judges will assume that you can't remember the steps.
Look interested, responsive and pleasant even is nerves are gnawing at your stomach. Volunteer to be in the first group or line if volunteers are called for. You need to show confidence but not arrogance.
Let the Director know when you "get it" - a simple nod will do. Judges want to see people who look like they are enjoying dancing....smile!
Remember, you don't necessarily have to be the best, but if you look like you're having a blast and enjoying your experience. The auditionor doing the steps perfectly but continually frowning with concentration is not a good performer.
