MAKEUP COLORS, FOUNDATIONS, HIGHLIGHTS & SHADOWS

COLORS:

1. Using Red, Blue, Yellow, White and Black you can mix any color you want.

2. COMPLEMENTARY COLORS (Blue/Orange, Red/Green)

Mixed together in equal amounts produce Gray

3. Always mix a dark color into a lighter color

FOUNDATION:

1. Foundations can give the skin a new color. Foundation color will be determined by the color of the stage lights, color of costumes, character's age, environment and health.

2. Cover all exposed skin, including ears, neck, arms, and hands -- never apply to palms!

3. Types of foundation

Cream - (pigment & lanolin) *most versatile

Cake - (water - pigment with binder) dry & limiting

Grease paint - (pigment & oil) heavy

SHADOWS: Occur on skin wherever an area is deprived of light. Think of shadows in terms of color (browns look muddy from stage). Shadows increase and deepen with age. You cannot have a shadow without a highlight.

HIGHLIGHT: Occurs in area which receives a great deal of light. Think of highlight in terms of color with white. You cannot have a highlight without a shadow.

ACCENTS: A small amount of either a highlight or a shadow color occurring at the deepest or brightest shadow or highlight. These will "sell" your make up if used properly.

MAKE UP -- SOME THINGS TO ALWAYS REMEMBER

1 Clean your face before applying stage make up. Remove all "street make up", etc.

2 If your skin is excessively dry, use a tiny amount of cream under your foundation (exception: grease paint).

3 If your skin is excessively oily, rinse with cold water and apply an astringent under your foundation (alcohol).

4 Never apply your make up in costume.

Always use a "lap towel" and dress grubby, an oversized button shirt is perfect. Be Aware that some make up will ruin some fabrics.

6 Powder all make ups. It sets the make up, and helps avoid "sweating through" on stage. Powder carefully - your puff will transfer very dark colors to other areas.

7 If you become allergic to a certain type of make up - STOP USING IT. Make ups can be purchased "Hypo-Allergenic".

8 Always use a foundation under a red liner or it may temporarily "stain" your skin.

9 Remove your make up as soon as possible after a performance. If you use care in removal, you will not have a blemish problem.
